It is a normal part of growing up for children and adolescents to test limits and be defiant every once and a while. They may get sassy or have tantrums, be disobedient and the like; but when this behavior lasts longer than six months at a time and is excessive compared to other children their age, it could be a sign of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD).
